Systematic energy management in cities and counties in the Republic of Croatia

Under motto “Development we don′t want to stop. But pollution, we can!” 2nd working conference of project Systematic energy management in cities and counties in the Republic of Croatia – Sustainable development of cities, was held in Westin Hotel, Zagreb, from April 27th to 29th, 2009.
It is a follow-up to the very successful initiative that produced the conference Energy Management in Cities and Counties of Croatia that took place in May of 2008. Some 300 – 400 county and city mayors, investors in the building sector, heads of city planning offices, and other city and business representatives are expected to attend this high level event. The organizers are the City of Zagreb, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and North-West Croatia Regional Energy Agency (REGEA).
The main purpose of the conference is to enhance energy management in the cities of Croatia by focusing on the environment, on sustainable energy management of public utility systems, city planning and architecture, on an integrated approach to design and construction in the business and residential sectors, as well as on exchange of knowledge and experiences between the various European and Croatian cities.
The event will provide an opportunity to strengthen and revitalize our cities by introducing innovations within urban planning, the environment, technology, and energy management of all city services.
The conference is intended for mayors, representatives of local governments, universities, scientific institutions, engineers, architects, construction investors, development and energy agencies, as well as the media.
The three-day program includes speeches from prominent local and global authorities within the field, a visit and a expert presentation on waste water purification at the Zagreb complex for water purification (CUPOVZ), a welcome cocktail, a formal dinner, a film viewing on the subject, and a press conference at the end of the event.
What about Novalja?
Novalja is pilot city of MODEL which stands for “Management of Domains Related to Energy in Local Authorities”. It encourages municipalities to become models for their citizens and local stakeholders in the field of rational use of energy. Decision makers of 42 pilot cities from 10 New EU Member States and Croatia decided to join the project and change their city’s image.

As the city of Novalja is one of the top three summer destinations at the Croatian coast (Island of Pag) and the main port on the island of Pag, energy demand and environment management are the top priority. There are several EE and RES projects which should
be implemented in the next period and the IE MODEL project will give us clear direction by means of a bottom-down approach. At the same time, as the City of Novalja does not have energy manager (non-existing administrative function) this will be an opportunity to
upgrade our energy management skills and give us a bright vision of future energy plans; and through conducting/organizing energy days to educate local citizens and potential investors.

That One Counts Too – WhyCroatia.org

If you didn’t noticed yet, a few days ago, started a new web project called WhyCroatia.org. The goal of this “one of a kind” project is to save (in these times of recession) and promote Croatian tourism in a different way. All for zero kuna. How you ask? Very simple, via short videos that we all make and publish online. The excellent idea came from Borja a month ago and soon this fresh project was born. Under motto “that one counts too” people behind WhyCroatia did a great and wonderful job in short time. You can follow them on Twitter or on Facebook.
If you have a brilliant idea why someone should visit Croatia and you are willing to share it, then be a participant! Because we all count! All you have to do is:

Papaya Club has Opened the Summer 2008

This weekend Papaya Beach Club opened its doors for Summer season 2008. Beautiful Papaya hostesses, Dj Playa and attractive dancers made the full Papaya Club dance to the dawn. Every guest got a present, a new CD compilation Papaya Motomusic vol. 4. This opening weekend was just a intro to Papaya Day&Night Motomusic Festival and Tuborg Green Beat Weekend.

Antonja Fest 2008.

June the 13th is St. Anthony’s day. St. Anthony is Novalja’s guardian saint. Numerous events will be held to celebrate the Day of town of Novalja. Gre nan Antonja Fest started today at noon in front of Boat Petrol Station in center of Novalja. As you can see from the pictures the rain didn’t spoil the good mood and a big ox was prepared on the roasting spit. At 4PM our racing champion Niko Pulić will present first racing car that runs on bio diesel. Exhibit of Pag laces made in workshop in Novalja will open at 9PM in gallery Nevia. This year Antonja Fest continues tomorrow, June the 8th, with St. Anthony’s bowling cup that will be held near Novalja’s Firehouse. But that’s not all folks! Events will continue thru the hole next week so remember to visit our page regularly and find out what has Novalja prepared for 2008 tourist season start.

George W. Bush visiting Novalja?!

During his visit to Croatia, starting on Friday, George W. Bush, the president of the United Sates, will visit Novalja. Even though, in the interview with Croatian journalist Branka Slavica, that was broadcasted on Croatia Television few days ago, Bush said he wouldn’t have the time to visit Croatian coast, we heard breaking news, unofficially of course, from few high sources (from Novalja and Zagreb), that he will be visiting Novalja on Saturday. This visit will be a great recognition to Novalja’s mayor Ivan Dabo Đono and his efforts to make Novalja top tourist destination in Croatia. Visit will begin with reception in the town hall. Afterwards the whole official suite will have lunch in Luna Hotel, where the guests will be entertained by Sandra Dabo, Kraljica Novalje (Queen of Novalja). Ongoing preparations were silently made, and now are almost over. People in Novalja, though excited that U.S. president is visiting their small town, are a bit tired due to all security measures that have been made. We are waiting for official confirmation and the final itinerary release by Croatian Government that is scheduled for later today.

Novalja is Preparing for Summer 2008.

First event to open Novalja’s tourist season 2008. is Novaljski fuštan, a music and fashion event that combines a traditional and modern music and fashion expression, that is scheduled in May 2008. On Antonja (St. Anthony’s day), Novalja’s guardian saint, on June the 13th, there will be a Children’s festival, a music competition for children from the Island of Pag. Festival Melodije Istre i Kvarnera (Melodies of Istria and Kvarner) is arriving in Novalja at the end of June. During July and August theatrical plays will be held as part of Novaljski trijatar event. Also there is a plan to organize some kind of street theater shows that will be held in foreign languages too. Within Novaljsko glazbeno ljeto 2008. (Novalja’s Musical Summer 2008) classical music fans will be able to enjoy in some great classical masterpieces performed by musician from Music school “Mirković” from Opatija. Around of Vela Gospa (The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) holiday Island’s Pag folk music festival is going to be held.
Lunjska maslinijada (Lun’s days of olives) will be held in spring where local olive manufactures will present their products. Pag cheese and sheep exhibition is scheduled in first week of July. The exhibition includes various workshops and Pag cheese tasting. Best quality cheese and sheep will be awarded.
That’s not all folks, from May till the end of September there will be other numerous events like: cultural and sports shows, concerts, swimming marathons, ethno evenings and exhibitions in City Museum.
We will put a detailed calendar of summer 2008 events as soon we know the exact dates.

Radio Novalja?!

Radio Novalja, a few years old idea of starting Novalja’s local radio is back to the headlines again this days. The idea of starting a radio station in Novalja was well accepted then, but even more today when Novalja has become leading tourist center of the island of Pag. Same idea was already achieved in town of Pag, so in 1992. we got island’s first radio station called Radio Pag that broadcasts on 94.8 MHz. Do we need a second one? Well, competition is always healthy. Especially between Novalja and Pag. Local goverment will support this idea by providing place for studio, and 150000 kunas (cca. 20000 €) in this year’s local budget.
